Ayutthaya Flooding

Giving out bags of aid, one per family

The recent severe flooding in Ayutthaya has caused 5.24 billion baht in damage and about 406,000 people are affected. After visiting some of the affected areas, what I saw was literally a city underwater, houses were drowning and the water levels inches from telephone wires. For the people who could make it, they would canoe out to the areas where the water hadn’t swallowed up and there would be organizations led by monks and a couple volunteers from the Regents school giving out aid. Basically these bags of aid consisted of rice, noodles, bread and snacks. Other trucks would be giving out meals of rice with meat and sauces. People were continually lining up for these bags of aid and then would return to their canoes and head back to their families and what was left of their home. It was difficult at first who would recieve the bags of aid and to make sure there was enough for each family. It was also quite awkward at first to go up to people and handing out things but after a while everyone was hard at work giving out as much as we could. As cliché as it sounds actually doing something, handing out the bags of supplies, knowing that we had helped and made even a temporary difference for some of the families suffering out there was definitely a worthwhile feeling.

My wif’es family is stuck just north of Ayutthaya and they are off the main road a bit. When food arrives all the people on the road (which isn’t flooded and where most have taken refuge) take it all for themselves. People’s true nature comes out when things are difficult.
